EPA Superfund Site
ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE
AK | EPA ID AK8570028649
About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2025, the Elmendorf Air Force Base Superfund site is considered “Insufficient Data to make a Human Exposure evaluation” (HEID) due to ongoing investigations at multiple newly identified sites and the evaluation of the vapor intrusion pathway at established Operable Units. Several vapor intrusion (VI) investigations are currently ongoing. The EPA uses this Human Exposure status when there is insufficient evidence to suggest that actual or reasonably anticipated human exposures are occurring, and that those exposures are above acceptable risk-based levels. Planned activities include collecting sufficient information to evaluate contaminants at sites such as SS022 DRMO yard, TU091 UST/OWS, SO552 TCE, CG111 Johnson Ave Plume, CG703 Northern OU1 Landfill Plume, CG704 Southern OU1 Landfill Plume, DA115 PCB Soil Pile, and 25 sites with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS in groundwater is migrating off of Elmendorf, and there are public water systems that may be downgradient. While there do not appear to be private wells used for drinking water in the Government Hill neighborhood, there may be private wells in Mountain View and other neighborhoods downgradient. The JBER-E PFAS plume extent is not yet delineated. Land use controls (LUCs) prohibit soil disturbance without a dig permit approved by Air Force environmental staff and prohibit the use of groundwater as a drinking water source. However, these controls do not prevent exposure that may occur due to vapor intrusion from groundwater contaminated with volatile substances. Surface water remains the primary drinking water source for Elmendorf AFB. The EPA currently anticipates that sufficient data to make a Human Exposure evaluation will be available by 2030, given the types of contaminants under investigation.
