Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of April 2025, the Dover Air Force Base Superfund site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" (HENC). Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in private drinking water off-base and this exposure pathway is above levels of concern.

The US Air Force (Air Force) is currently providing is currently providing point of entry treatment systems (POETS) for several residences and businesses whose wells have a combined PFOA and PFOS concentrations greater than 70 ppt. Wells which are less than 70 ppt but greater than 4 ppt, the newly established Federal MCLs for PFOA and PFOS, have not yet been addressed. The Air Force is currently evaluating next steps for these homes whose drinking water wells exceed the Federal PFAS MCLs. For ways in which individuals can reduce their exposure to PFAS in drinking water, please visit EPA's website (https://www.epa.gov/pfas/meaningful-and-achievable-steps-you-can-take-reduce-your-risk).

A remedial investigation is ongoing to determine the nature and extent of the PFAS contamination at the base. The current planned completion date is December 31, 2029, and at that time, it is expected that human exposure will be under control (HEUC).

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
