NEWARK SOUTH GROUND WATER PLUME
DE | EPA ID DEN000306877
About this site’s exposure pathways:
As of March 2025, there is insufficient data to determine the human exposure status at the Newark South Ground Water Plume Superfund Site. The primary contaminants of concern (COC) at the Site are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE). Based on historical sampling data, other VOCs, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and metals are also potential COCs. EPA has begun the Remedial Investigation (RI) to further define the nature and extent of the contamination. The City of Newark has taken precautions to ensure that the municipal water supply, which was historically impacted by the plume, meets State and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act Standards. The EPA has also determined that vapor intrusion is not currently a concern at the Site, based on low levels of VOC detections in the vicinity of buildings. Potential receptors to Site COCs may include people who come into contact with contaminated soil as well as construction workers working in excavations. As part of the ongoing RI, a risk assessment will be developed to assist in making a human exposure determination. The EPA anticipates the data collection and risk assessment to conclude in Spring 2028
