EPA Superfund Site
WOOLFOLK CHEMICAL WORKS, INC.
GA | EPA ID GAD003269578
About this site’s exposure pathways:
As of September 2024, the Woolfolk Superfund site is considered “Insufficient Data to make a Human Exposure evaluation” (HEID) because the operable unit one (OU1) pesticide groundwater plume has not been fully delineated and is not contained. The site was previously categorized as Human Exposure Under Control (HEUC) however during Groundwater sampling in 2023 and 2024, contamination was detected in the shallow surficial aquifer as well as the three lower aquifers. During the 2023 and 2024 sampling events, drinking water wells downgradient of the Site were found to contain pesticides below the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and risk management levels (RMLs) but in exceedance of the Record of Decision (ROD) cleanup levels and tap water residential screening levels (RSLs).
EPA uses this Human Exposure status when there is a lack of evidence to suggest that actual or reasonably anticipated human exposures are occurring and that those exposures are above acceptable risk-based levels. Additional groundwater sampling has been planned to collect sufficient information to evaluate the groundwater as a drinking water exposure pathway and contaminant impacted groundwater area to determine the full extent of contaminated groundwater. There are also other potential source areas that may be contributing to the groundwater plume. Investigations to explore these potential sources are planned for the near future. EPA currently anticipates that there will be sufficient data to make a Human Exposure evaluation by December 2027 since several rounds of groundwater sampling have already been scheduled and will be ongoing.
