Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of October 2024, EPA considers the LCP Chemicals Georgia site to be "Human Exposure Not Under Control" because EPA is aware that people are consuming contaminated fish, despite warning signs and fish advisories. The levels of methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyols (PCBs) (primarily Aroclor 1268) detected in fish fillets presents an unacceptable human health risk for fish and shellfish consumption. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources issued a fish consumption advisory for the Turtle River/Brunswick Estuary from 1995 to the present. Fish advisory signs have been posted at marsh access points from land and water. EPA issued the cleanup plan for the marsh (Operable Unit 1) in September 2015, the remedial design was completed in March 2022 and the remedial action construction was completed in November 2023. EPA will continue to monitor the contaminant concentrations in the marsh during the monitoring phase. The EPA expects that it will be at least a decade before human exposure will be under control and will continue to advise that fish at the site should not be consumed until the detected levels are below the health risk clean up goal. EPA has prepared a Community Involvement Plan and provides updates and other information about the site through regular meetings.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
