Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of October 2024, the Westside Lead Superfund Site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC) due to potential direct contact on residential properties having soil contaminated with lead above the selected lead cleanup goal of 400 parts per million (ppm). The site was listed on the National Priorities List in March 2022. A total of 311 out of 600 properties identified for cleanup have been remediated. Approximately 600 properties remain to be sampled, and the project team estimates that approximately 850 properties will require cleanup at the current cleanup level. The November 2022 final sitewide Record of Decision (ROD) for soil selected a remedial action to address the lead contaminated soil by excavation of contaminated soil above 400 ppm. The EPA is continuing to prioritize the clean-up of high-risk properties that are known to have children living at or frequenting the property on a usual basis. The clean-up of all properties with lead above the clean-up goal will be addressed through the ongoing clean-up action. If you are impacted by risks inherent at this site, you can reduce your risk by providing access for sampling and cleanup if it is determined to be necessary. If you are in contact with soil that you think might be contaminated, do not stay long, do not take contaminated items into your homes, and use good hygiene practices by washing your hands before consuming food. EPA currently anticipates that human exposure will be under control by August 2030 because that is when the cleanup is anticipated based on current funding and work completion schedules.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
