Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of August 2025, the Sandoval Zinc Superfund Site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" because soil at some residential properties contains concentrations of lead and other metals that exceed health-based levels. Concentrations of lead at some properties are well above the lead cleanup number. EPA conducted a time-critical removal action at 10 properties in 2017. EPA has conducted extensive community outreach about the site status and how to mitigate risks posed by lead-contaminated soil through public meetings and the dissemination of fact sheets. EPA issued the Interim Record of Decision (IROD) on September 30, 2022. The cleanup will address contaminated soil in the Village of Sandoval, the former smelter property, and adjacent areas. EPA, collaborating with USACE, started the Remedial Design in late 2024. Sampling of residential properties started in May 2025. Combined, the Remedial Design and Remedial Action should take approximately seven years.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
