Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of May 2025, the Caney Residential Yards site in Caney, Kansas, is classified as Human Exposure Not Under Control due to contamination from two former lead smelters. Lead, the main contaminant, resulted from smokestack emissions and smelter waste used in construction materials. Residents face exposure risks through inhalation or ingestion of contaminated soil in yards, parks, and school properties. The EPA has sampled 1,041 properties, with 344 already remediated for lead levels exceeding 400 parts per million (ppm). A 2022 policy update lowered the action level to 200 ppm. Remediation is ongoing under a federal contract, which has been operating since March 8, 2024, for qualifying properties.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
