Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2025, there is insufficient information to determine the human exposure status at the Cherokee Zinc - Weir Smelter site. The site is composed of two Operable Units: OU1 - Residential Yards and OU2 - Former Smelter. Previous investigations conducted by the state and EPA removal program identified that residents and recreational users of the mine waste areas and impacted surface water may be exposed through direct contact to lead, zinc, and cadmium contaminated soils and sediments. Two removal actions were completed to address several residential yards at the site in 2021 and 2025. A human health exposure assessment for residential risk is anticipated to be completed by January 2027 during the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility study ahead of the final Record of Decision.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
