Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2024, the American Creosote Deridder Superfund site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" (HENC). Based on the 2023 risk assessment documents and 2024 remedial investigation report (supplemental) report, there is sufficient information to determine there is risk present in surface soil, sediment, and surface water (benzo[a]pyrene and naphthalene) at concentrations higher than the acceptable risk range at the Site property and onto an adjoining property. This exposure pathway is considered unacceptable based on EPA risk-based criteria because, beyond densely vegetated surface characteristics, there are no physical barriers to prevent potential exposure to impacted media on adjoining properties outside the Site property.

Currently, the planned activities to address this pathway are to complete the Feasibility Study to consider remedial alternatives which would prevent potential long-term exposure. The chosen remedy will be conveyed in the Record of Decision for the Site which EPA anticipates will be completed in August 2026. EPA currently anticipates controls for human exposure will be initiated at the start of Remedial Action in September 2028.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
