EPA Superfund Site

CREESE & COOK TANNERY (FORMER)

MA | EPA ID MAD001031574

Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of December 2024, the Creese & Cook Tannery (Former) Superfund site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" because soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins and metals pose an unacceptable risk to residents, construction workers, trespassers, and recreational visitors on both the East Study Area (Operable Unit 1) and the West Study Area (Operable Unit 2). This determination is based on site-specific risk assessments that took concentrations of chemicals present and frequency/duration of exposure, among other things, into account.

EPA issued a Record of Decision in 2019 outlining the selected remedial action for the site. Human exposure under control will be achieved once those portions of the remedy addressing current exposures are implemented. The Remedial Action is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025. This will involve the excavation of contaminated soil and construction of a consolidation cell for the containment of wastes. Time-critical removal actions remain underway to address current exposures on residential properties in the East Study Area.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
