Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of August 2024, the Microfab, Inc. (Former) Superfund Site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC). Based on results from draft Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) work, potential exposure pathways and Contaminants of Potential Concern (COPCs) were identified in each media. Based on a wide range of of COPC concentrations across the Site, risk is being evaluated for “on-property” and “off-property” Site-impacted areas. (1) On-property soils: trespasser, recreational user, construction/utility worker, hypothetical future resident; COPCs = metals & polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). (2) On-property surface water: recreational user; COPCs = metals, cyanide, PAHs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs). (3) On-property sediment: recreational user; COPCs = metals, PAHs, VOCs. (4) Groundwater: Potable use (hypothetical resident) and Shallow groundwater in a trench (Construction/Utility worker); COPCs = metals, cyanide, PAHs, VOCs. (5) Off-Property soil: recreational user, industrial/commercial worker, construction/utility worker, off-site resident; COPCs = metals, PAHs. (6) Off-property surface water: recreational user; COPCs = metals, cyanide, PAHs, VOCs. (7) Off-Property sediment: recreational user; COPCs = metals and VOCs. (7) Off-Property soil vapor (Floodplain/wetlands area): Current/future resident or commercial worker; COPCs = VOCs (cis-1,2-dichloroethane (cis-1,2-DCE), trans-1,2-dichloroethane (trans-1,2-DCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE)). EPA has installed fencing and signage to restrict access to the most significant on-property contamination, however there is evidence of periodic trespassing at the property and thus potential exposures to COPCs in surface soil/sediment. Site-impacted groundwater is not currently in use, and Amesbury has a public water supply. The elevated off-property COPC concentrations in sediment, surface water, soil, and groundwater currently reside in undeveloped areas including wetlands and utility property easements, but is located just north of residential areas. EPA will complete a Record of Decision (ROD) in 2025 to select remedial alternatives to address Site contamination by media.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
