Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2025, Velsicol Chemical Corporation Superfund Site is considered "human exposures are not under control" until all of the Operable Unit (OU) 1 remedy is implemented. Operable Unit 1 is fenced and hazardous chemicals are uncontrolled onsite under an inadequate cap in soil and groundwater. Contaminants of concern (COCs) include dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), hexabromobenzene (HBB), 1,2‐dibromo‐3‐chloropropane (DBCP), and other chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Fish tissue data show significantly decreased DDT concentrations due to the Pine River sediment clean-up, but fish advisories remain. Warning signs against eating fish are posted at river access points. Remedial Action Objectives (RAOs) include preventing the ingestion, inhalation, and direct contact with site-related COCs. Five of 14 OU 1 remedy components are implemented which include source control and replacement of municipal water supply, with installation of a vertical barrier wall and slurry wall repair to be complete in 2026. Remaining remedy components are in remedial design which include additional source control and completion of containment system.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
