Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of May 2025, there is insufficient data to determine the site-wide current human exposure control status at the Spartan Chemical Co. Superfund site. A Record of Decision was issued in September 2007 identifying the remedy addressing remaining contamination in site soil, soil vapor, and groundwater. An Explanation of Significant Differences was signed in 2018 addressing the increased volume for soil excavation. Full-scale soil excavation began in June 2023 and was completed by December 2023. Data collected to determine if surrounding residences or commercial/industrial buildings have unacceptable levels of indoor vapor intrusion (VI) from site-related volatile organic chemical contamination shows inconclusive results. VI investigations are ongoing and a determination regarding the human exposure control status due to VI is expected by the end of December 2025.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by EPA, and is not a substitute for a professional environmental assessment.
