Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of December 2024, the Shiawassee River site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" because new contaminants were identified in soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and indoor air. From September 2021 through February 2024, a preliminary vapor intrusion (VI) and groundwater investigation was conducted at the Site. Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified above criteria in on-Site groundwater and sub-slab soil gas and chlorinated VOCs were detected in indoor air, indicating a complete VI pathway. Further, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were identified in on-Site groundwater above the EPA Regional Screening Levels (RSLs). VOCs and PFAS were not identified as contaminants of concern in the 2001 Record of Decision. A remedial investigation/feasibility study will be completed followed by a Record of Decision selecting a new remedy. Human exposures are expected to be under control by the end of 2028.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
