Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of August 2025, there is insufficient information to determine the site-wide Human Exposure (HE) Control status at the DSC McLouth Steel Gibraltar Plant Superfund site. EPA started the remedial investigation (RI) in 2016. EPA signed an interim Record of Decision in 2016 selecting a source control remedy addressing leachate from Landfills A and B and the treatment ponds. Michigan EGLE pumps leachate from Countywide Landfill for off-site disposal. Leachate from the landfills has been shown to contain naphthalene, phenol, mercury, 2,4-dimethylphenol, barium, and cyanide, and have a high pH. Water in on-site ponds has been shown to contain phenols, PCBs, metals, and high pH. The RI to define the contamination is ongoing. A human health risk assessment will follow. The Site is fenced but workers at the nearby mill have access to portions of the Site. EPA anticipates having sufficient data from the RI and risk assessment to make an HE determination by the end of 2027.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
