Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2025, the Billings PCE Superfund site is considered Human Exposure Not Under Control (HENC). Multiple vapor intrusion and groundwater investigations have been completed since the Billings PCE site was finalized for the National Priorities List (NPL) on 9 September 2021, and a human health risk assessment (HHRA) addressing the vapor intrusion pathway was completed in August 2024. The HHRA identified exposures that are above acceptable risk-based levels for multiple contaminants of concern.
An interim Record of Decision (ROD) for operable unit 1 (OU1) to address the vapor intrusion pathway is anticipated in 2026. Once all eligible structures have mitigations systems in place and institutional controls have been implemented as part of the OU1 remedial action, human exposure will be under control since there are no known potable uses of the groundwater.
EPA continuously conducts community outreach efforts (e.g., fact sheet, community meetings). The OU1 Proposed Plan public comment period ended on September 27, 2025 and is developing the responsiveness summary as part of the interim ROD.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
