Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2024, the PCE Carriage Cleaners Superfund site is considered “Insufficient Data to make a Human Exposure evaluation” (HEID). PCE Carriage Cleaners was finalized on the National Priorities List (NPL) in December 2022, and there has not yet been an evaluation of the human health exposure risks. EPA uses this status when there is insufficient data/evidence to determine whether actual or reasonably anticipated human exposures are occurring, and/or whether those exposures are above acceptable risk-based levels. The planned activities to collect sufficient information to make a human exposure evaluation are a remedial investigation (RI) followed by a feasibility study (FS). The investigation will evaluate the nature and extent of contamination in soil and groundwater. This includes an evaluation of potential vapor intrusion from contaminated media into occupied structures. Once adequate data is gathered, EPA will perform a risk assessment to determine exposure pathways of concern and threats to human health. EPA currently anticipates that sufficient data to make a determination will be collected by fall 2027 once the RI/FS phase is completed. Currently, EPA has determined that no unacceptable near-term risks are occurring. In 2021, EPA initiated a time-critical removal action to address locations immediately affected by contamination. This action consisted of an assessment of soil and groundwater within the area of the former dry cleaner as well as a vapor intrusion assessment of nearby structures. Where appropriate, EPA installed vapor mitigation systems to permanently eliminate potential exposure risks. Contact Wes March at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
