Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of January 2025, there is insufficient information to determine the sitewide human exposure control status at the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Superfund Site, which consists of the McCaffrey Street facility property and downgradient contaminated groundwater. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) is the lead agency for the site. A permanent treatment system to address contamination of the public supply well was installed in 2017. An interim action to prevent contaminated groundwater from moving off the facility property toward the public supply well was implemented in 2019. On June 25, 2024, a draft remedial investigation (RI) report, which includes a quantitative risk assessment, was received. Based upon our review of the document, it appears that the RI report does not characterize the sources of contamination or delineate the extent of contamination from the McCaffrey Street site. Discussions between EPA and NYSDEC regarding necessary revisions to the RI continue. The RI is not expected to be revised until later in 2025 and a ROD is not likely until 2026; as a result, a human exposure determination is not anticipated to be made before 2026.

EPA and NYSDEC will ensure community participation throughout the remedial process by meeting with residents and affected stakeholders, issuing public notices and updating fact sheets. A site profile has been established on the EPA website to keep the community informed of recent progress at the site throughout the remedial process. Additionally, an EPA Community Involvement Coordinator is assigned to the site and can address specific community concerns as they arise.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by EPA, and is not a substitute for a professional environmental assessment.
