About this site’s exposure pathways:
As of January 2025, there is insufficient information to determine the site-wide human exposure status at the Meeker Avenue Plume site in Brooklyn, New York. The site was listed on the NPL in March 2022 and a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) is currently being conducted to determine the nature and extent of contamination. Once the RI is completed, a risk assessment will be prepared to determine the potential impact to human health and the environment. An initial round of groundwater sampling to refine the extent of the plume was conducted from August to December 2023, during which a total of 344 existing wells were sampled. Based on the results, 36 additional wells were installed from June to September 2024, and at least another 6 will be installed in spring 2025. In Fall 2024, another comprehensive round of groundwater sampling was conducted, which included re-sampling of those sampled in December 2023 as well as sampling of the newly installed wells and additional existing wells . The results of this sampling round will help further refine the extent of the plume. Vapor intrusion sampling was conducted during the winter 2022/2023 and 2023/234 heating seasons. An additional round of vapor intrusion sampling was conducted in December 2024, another round is scheduled for March 2025, and additional rounds will continue to be conducted over the next several heating seasons. A Proposed Plan related to vapor intrusion mitigation of was released in April 2024 and EPA signed a Record of Decision in September 2024 which allows for vapor intrusion mitigation at residential and non-residential properties where it is determined to be necessary. The Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) is currently expected to be completed in 2029, at which time a sitewide human exposure determination can be made.
EPA currently ensures community participation throughout the remedial process by meeting with residents and affected stakeholders, issuing public notices and updating fact sheets which are available on the web. An EPA Community Involvement Coordinator is assigned to the site and can address specific community concerns as they arise. Additionally, the community has formed a Community Advisory Group (CAG) to discuss and represent the diverse interests of the community in relation to the site.
