EAST TROY CONTAMINATED AQUIFER

OH | EPA ID OHSFN0507962

Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of August 2025, the East Troy Contaminated Aquifer Superfund site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” because residents over the groundwater plume may be exposed to PCE via the vapor intrusion (VI) pathway. EPA addressed the indoor air risk by installing abatement systems in 16 homes and an Elementary School in 2007. VOCs have contaminated groundwater and a local drinking water well field. Although EPA found no unacceptable risks to public health in the 2014 Remedial Investigation, EPA guidance allows for preemptive VI mitigation if sub-slab vapor concentrations are high and may pose a potential for future unacceptable risk. The 2018 Interim Source Area Record of Decision includes the installation of abatement systems at all homes above the groundwater treatment area and within a three block buffer. Implementation of the remedy is expected to be completed by 2028. Community outreach activities have included mailings, public meeting, and fact sheets.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
