Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of November 2024, the Umatilla Army Depot (Lagoons) Superfund Site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control (HENC)”. Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) are present in soils on private property adjacent to the Depot. The Army has remediated a substantial portion of this private property, but MEC contamination has been discovered beyond the original area of interest. Although MEC risk is not addressed quantitatively, any exposure to the public is unacceptable. Currently, the Army, EPA, and the State of Oregon are determining how best to complete the investigation and remediation of the remaining contaminated private property. The property owner has been informed and has received munitions training. However, the Right of Entry agreement has expired, and the Army must re-negotiate it with the property owner. EPA currently anticipates that human exposure will be under control by 2027. The pump and treat groundwater remedy is operating effectively, and the remaining operable units (OUs) have protective remedies in place.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
