Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of April 2025, Navy Ship Parts Control Center (Mechanicsburg) Superfund site is considered “Current Human Exposures Not Controlled” (HENC); this designation is the same as for year 2024. Newly identified contaminants, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have been detected in private drinking water off-base. Some residential drinking water wells have been identified with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) values that exceed the Pennsylvania Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) and EPA MCLs for PFOA and PFOS that have not been addressed.

Currently, the planned activities by the Navy to address this pathway are additional residential sampling, provision of point of use (POU) filters, and providing alternative drinking water via public water connections to each home. A remedial investigation is ongoing to determine the nature and extent of the PFAS contamination at the base. If you are impacted by the risks inherent at this site, please contact Cathy Mann at 717-605-2179. EPA currently anticipates that human exposure will be under control by September 2026 because POU filters alternative drinking water will be provided to eliminate this exposure pathway.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
