EPA Superfund Site

NAVAL AIR DEVELOPMENT CENTER (8 WASTE AREAS)

PA | EPA ID PA6170024545

Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of April 2025, the Naval Air Development Center (8 Waste Areas) Superfund site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" (HENC). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in private and public drinking water off-base and this exposure pathway is above levels of concern. It is estimated that human exposure will be under control by September 2027.

The Navy is currently providing alternative water and offering connections to homes where the private wells exceed the Department of Defense (DoD) established action levels of three times the MCLs for PFAS within the Navy's sampling area. MCLs are standards defining the highest level of a contaminant allowed in drinking water. The Navy has expanded the sampling area for private well actions and is in the process of sampling the wells in that area.

The Navy has also expanded the cooperative agreement to address additional public wells above the DoD's action levels. More information about the Navy's efforts at this site can be found at Navy's website ( https://www.bracpmo.navy.mil/BRAC-Bases/Northeast/Former-Naval-Air-Warfare-Center-Warminster/). For ways in which individuals can reduce their exposure to PFAS in drinking water, please visit EPA's website (https://www.epa.gov/pfas/meaningful-and-achievable-steps-you-can-take-reduce-your-risk).

A Remedial Investigation (assessment of contamination and evaluation of cleanup options) is ongoing to determine the nature and extent of the PFAS contamination at the base and is expected to be completed by 2030.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
