About this site’s exposure pathways: As of March 2025, there is not sufficient information to determine the Human Exposure Control status at the Metro Container Corporation Superfund Site (Site). Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs) are conducting a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) at Operable Unit 1 (OU1) and EPA has initiated an RI/FS at Operable Unit 2 (OU2). The RI/FS phase involves evaluating the contamination's nature and extent and identifying cleanup options based on performance and cost. The extent of contamination at OU1, which includes the area where releases occurred, is nearly complete, except for characterization of the nature and extent of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Contaminants of potential concern (COPCs) identified at OU1 include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and inorganic elements. Sampling has not yet been conducted at OU2 to date, although the COPCs are expected to also include PCBs, SVOCs, VOCs, and inorganic elements (or a subset of these COPCs, as OU2 is down gradient from OU1). EPA currently anticipates that there will be sufficient data to make a Human Exposure determination by January 2025 because preliminary findings of a Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) for OU1 are expected at that time. This assessment evaluates potential health risks from exposure to contaminants, considering factors like exposure pathways and contaminant levels. EPA will assure that any unacceptable exposures are addressed. Pennsylvania has fish consumption advisories for the Delaware River Estuary for several species due to the presence of PCBs, not wholly due to releases from the Site.
