Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of June 2025, the Willow Grove Naval Air and Air Reserve Station Superfund site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC). Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in private drinking water off-base and this exposure pathway is above levels of concern.

The Navy and Air National Guard are currently providing connections to private homes whose wells have a combined perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) above the Pennsylvania maximum contaminant levels (MCLs); however, there are wells which are above the new Federal MCLs for PFOA and PFOS that have not yet been addressed. The Navy and Air National Guard are currently evaluating next steps for these homes. A remedial investigation is ongoing to determine the nature and extent of the PFAS contamination at the base and are expected to be completed by 2026.

More information about the Navy's efforts on their property site can be found at https://administrative-records.navfac.navy.mil/?PXMQQUXGO3UY6G47WO The Air National Guard administrative record is located at this site: https://ar.cce.af.mil/ For ways in which individuals can reduce their exposure to PFAS in drinking water, please visit EPA's website at https://www.epa.gov/pfas/meaningful-and-achievable-steps-you-can-take-reduce-your-risk.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
