Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of April 2025, there is not sufficient information available to determine the Sitewide Human Exposure Control status at the Safety Light Corporation Superfund Site because of newly identified potential exposure pathway and/or contaminants. Additional elevated radioactive soil contamination has been found along the Susquehanna River shoreline and outside the Site fence which are both publicly accessible. In addition, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is present off-site impacting a residential well.

The activities conducted to make the HE evaluation included installation of new monitoring wells, groundwater sampling, and soil sampling in the Fall 2023. Additional rounds of sampling were conducted Spring and Summer 2024. In addition, EPA has removed two discrete radioactive objects (i.e., radium needles) from the river shoreline and conducted a removal action in August 2023 to address radioactive soil contamination outside the current Site fence as immediate controls to address this exposure scenario. Data will be reviewed as it becomes available. In the interim, the affected residence with the PFAS-contaminated residential well has been provided with alternate water.

Individuals can reduce their exposure risk by not trespassing on the Site.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
