EPA Superfund Site

PRICE BATTERY LEAD SMELTER

Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of April 2025, the Price Battery Superfund site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC). This is based on the unrestricted pathway for lead exposure in residential soils present in Operable Unit (OU) 1. This exposure pathway is considered unacceptable because lead is known to be present in residential soils in exceedance of the soil screening levels of the Updated Residential Soil Lead Guidance for CERCLA Sites and RCRA Corrective Action Facilities released on January 17, 2024. Currently, the Site team is evaluating the impacts of the new lead guidance on the Site and is evaluating options under the current 2015 Final OU1 Record of Decision (ROD). EPA currently anticipates that human exposure will be under control by June 2029 due to the anticipated time it will take to further evaluate the possible risk, identify potential response actions, and undertake response actions if appropriate. In addition, EPA has previously taken extensive action at the Price Battery Superfund Site to clean up 555 residential properties. So while screening levels may have been lowered, there is no reason to believe Site related lead is present in residential soil where cleanup has occurred above previous cleanup goals. EPA will have to evaluate if the previous cleanup goals need to be lowered due to the lower screening levels.

Residents can take several proactive measures to reduce the risk of lead exposure, especially if they live near areas known for lead contamination. Regular cleaning is essential; wet mopping floors and wiping surfaces can significantly reduce dust that may contain lead, while cleaning window sills and wells helps prevent accumulation from outside sources. Encouraging frequent hand washing, particularly before meals and after outdoor activities, can remove lead dust effectively. To maintain cleanliness, remove shoes before entering the home and use doormats to minimize soil entry. In gardening and landscaping, using raised beds with clean soil and covering bare soil with grass, mulch, or wood chips can reduce dust generation. Home maintenance is crucial, particularly in older homes, where repairing peeling paint and using lead-safe practices during renovations can mitigate risks. Testing children’s blood lead levels can ensure early detection and intervention. Staying informed about local advisories and educating family members about minimizing contact with potential sources of lead are also key steps in reducing exposure risks and contributing to a healthier living environment. For personalized advice and support, consulting local health departments or environmental agencies is recommended.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
