EPA Superfund Site

HELENA CHEMICAL CO. LANDFILL

SC | EPA ID SCD058753971

Human exposure is NOT currently under control

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of September 2024, the Helena Chemical Landfill Superfund site (Site) is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC). The remedy is not protective because toxaphene contaminations are present in surface and subsurface soil at levels that exceed EPA’s industrial Removal Management Levels (RMLs). A warehouse/sales business is located at the Site and thereby exposure to on-site workers can be reasonably anticipated.

Currently, the planned activities to address this pathway are to delineate surface soil contaminations, prevent worker exposures through engineering and informational controls, and implement the necessary remedial actions to address contaminated surface and subsurface soils to eliminate potential risks to human health. If you are impacted by risks inherent at this site, you can reduce your risk by limiting your exposure to the surface soils. If you have any questions, please contact the Community Involvement Coordinator listed on the website.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
