Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of October 2024, the Barite Hill Superfund Site is considered to have insufficient information to determine the site-wide Human Exposure Control (HEID) status. EPA is conducting the Remedial Investigation (RI) and Feasibility Studies (FS) on multiple operable units (OUs) at the Site. The primary contaminants are metals and high pH levels in surface water and groundwater. An Interim Record of Decision for OU1 was issued in 2020, which included a remedy for the waste rock dump and Pit Lake -- the primary sources of contamination in OU1. A RI on additional areas of the Site, including heap leach piles and surface water was started in September 2020. EPA anticipates being able to make a Human Exposure determination by January 2027 when the RI and Risk Assessment data will be available. EPA will then prioritize appropriate action to address any unacceptable exposures. EPA has prepared a Community Involvement Plan and provides updates and other information about the site through regular meetings.

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
