EPA Superfund Site
JARD COMPANY, INC.
VT | EPA ID VTD048141741
About this site’s exposure pathways: As of December 2024, the Jard Superfund site is considered "Current Human Exposure Not Under Control" because individuals could come into contact with surface soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in portions of the site. Recent (i.e., 2022 and 2023) soil samples collected in the vicinity of the former Jard building were shown to contain total PCBs in surface soil (0 - 1 foot) ranging from 11 to 290 mg/kg, which pose an unacceptable risk to trespassers as well as recreational users of a nearby walking trail. While access to the soil at some locations may be limited by an existing soil cap and/or asphalt pavement, possible human exposure at all locations is not currently controlled. Despite some interim measures (such as placing clean mulch on the walking trail over areas of surface contamination), other areas of soil contamination exist (e.g., Ballfield property). The Region will evaluate additional interim options for addressing these current risks concurrently with completing the remedial investigation and feasibility study (RI/FS) and working on a long-term cleanup plan. The planned Human Exposure Under Control (HEUC) date is September 2026.
