Exposure status: insufficient data

About this site’s exposure pathways: As of December 2024, there is insufficient information available to determine the site-wide Human Exposure Control status for the Pike Hill Copper Mine Superfund site. Based on current information, metals are the constituents detected most frequently in soil, mine wastes, sediment, groundwater. Given the very large size and nature of the site it remains largely unsecured. EPA regularly responds to community requests for information on an as needed basis through phone calls and site visits. In the interim, EPA has completed an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) in 2022 leading to an Action Memo which was signed on September 30, 2022). The first Phase of the Non-Time-Critical Removal Actions (NTCRA) is on-going (in-situ stabilization of mine waste near protected bat hibernacula), and preparing the site for “Phase 2.” Phase 2 includes the excavation, consolidation and capping of 82,000 cubic yards of mine waste. The removal design for Phase 2 is ongoing, and once complete (i.e., Spring 2025) it is anticipated to take up to 6 to 9 months to make a contract award. The duration of site activities associated with Phase 2 is significant (likely 2 -3 years) – after which a groundwater remedial investigation and feasibility study (RI/FS) will commence. Human Health risks to groundwater will likely not be known until at least FY2029 (i.e., the year that a Human Exposure determination is likely is 2029).

Data limitations: Proximity to a Superfund site boundary does not mean your property is contaminated. EPA site boundaries show the area designated for cleanup, not the full extent of contamination. Groundwater plumes can extend beyond site boundaries. This tool shows publicly available EPA federal data.
