EPA Superfund Site
PADEN CITY GROUNDWATER
WV | EPA ID WVN000304985
About this site’s exposure pathways:
As of April 2025, the Paden City Groundwater Superfund Site is considered "Insufficient Data to make a Human Exposure evaluation" (HEID). The Paden City Groundwater Superfund Site was finalized on the NPL in 2022, and there has not yet been an evaluation of the human health exposure risks.
EPA uses this Human Exposure status when there is insufficient data/evidence to determine whether actual or reasonably anticipated human exposures are occurring, and/or whether those exposures are above acceptable risk-based levels. The planned activities to collect sufficient information to make a human health exposure evaluation is completion of a Remedial Investigation (RI). The RI includes sampling and analysis of soil, groundwater, soil gas, vapor intrusion, etc. and completion of a Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA). EPA currently anticipates that there will be sufficient data to make a Human Exposure determination by September 2027, because the RI, including the HHRA, will be complete.
EPA is aware, based on sampling conducted thus far, that soil and groundwater are contaminated with hazardous substances, primarily tetrachloroethylene (PCE), stemming from the former Bandbox Dry Cleaning Facility. This does not necessarily mean that unacceptable exposures are occurring, however. EPA has held annual meetings in Paden City for citizens to express their concerns, ask questions, and get updated on activities at the Site. For questions or concerns, please reach out to the Site's Community Involvement Coordinators.
