EPA Superfund Site
NORTH 25TH STREET GLASS AND ZINC
WV | EPA ID WVN000306876
About this site’s exposure pathways:
As of May 2025, the North 25th Glass and Zinc Superfund site is considered “Current Human Exposure Not Under Control” (HENC). Residential soil sampling data indicated elevated concentrations of lead and arsenic in surface soil in the North View residential neighborhood adjacent to the site. This exposure pathway is considered unacceptable based on EPA risk-based criteria because 49 properties had results above 200 parts per million (ppm) lead and 57 properties had results above 100 ppm lead. EPA's regional screening level for this site is 100 ppm.
Currently, the planned activities to address this pathway are a time-critical removal action at approximately 10 properties with lead results above 200 ppm and with young children that live at or frequently visit the home and a non-time critical removal action to address all remaining properties above 100 ppm. If you are impacted by risks inherent at this site, there are several steps you can take to prevent exposure such as not letting children play in bare dirt, washing you and your children's hands frequently and removing your shoes before entering your home. You may also contact EPA's community involvement coordinator regarding next steps for your property. EPA currently anticipates that human exposure will be under control by March 2027 because the non-time critical removal action is anticipated to be completed.
EPA has provided letters in the mail to all property owners that were sampled in July 2023 with the sampling results and additional resources and information to help prevent exposure.
EPA expects to complete the time-critical removal action for 10 properties by June 30, 2025. EPA is currently in the process of developing the EE/CA for the non-time critical removal action which will address the remaining properties with results above 100 ppm lead.
EPA is planning a second round of residential sampling in summer 2025 to sample additional homes located in the target zone between N 23rd and N 21st streets. EPA will review and evaluate the data to determine which properties may be eligible for a time-critical action.
